This is the most common question we receive from first-time buyers. In most cases it can be resolved in a few minutes with a tape measure and a rough volume calculation.
Start with what you are actually storing
Base the calculation on what goes in on day one, not on future needs. Estimate the footprint in square feet, multiply by a realistic stacking height, then add approximately 20 percent for aisle space and imperfect packing.
Now compare that number against the real capacities: roughly 1,170 cubic feet in a 20ft, 2,390 in a 40ft standard, 2,700 in a 40ft high-cube.
The 20ft is the default for a reason
A 20ft container holds approximately the volume of a one-car garage, fits on most Houston residential lots, and requires roughly 60 feet of straight-line delivery clearance rather than 100. For a home remodel, overflow inventory or a smaller jobsite, it is generally the correct size.
When to size up
Go to a 40ft if you're storing a full household, staging material for a larger build, or consolidating multiple rented storage units. The 40ft is meaningfully cheaper per cubic foot - you aren't paying double for double the space. What you need to check first is access: 100 feet of straight-line room, a gate wide enough, and a turning radius a loaded truck can actually manage.
When a high-cube is worth the difference
For general storage, the additional height is only useful if you are stacking tall or finishing the interior. Framing and an insulated ceiling reduce a standard container's 7'10" considerably. For any conversion project, start with a high-cube.
Two 20s or one 40?
A single 40ft is cheaper per cubic foot and gives you one uninterrupted run of space. Two 20ft units cost more but fit awkward lots, can sit in two different places, and are considerably easier to sell individually when you no longer need them. On tight Houston lots, two 20s solve problems a 40 simply can't.
